Week 3 Group 5 Number The Stars Ria

During chapter 14 and 15, two german soldiers stopped Annemarie from taking the package to Uncle Henrick. What might the importance of this package be in the context of the story and how does the author use this incident to build suspense?

If you were Annemarie, how would you be feeling at this stage and why? Use evidence from the text to support your ideas.

I just finished the book Number The Stars by Lois Lowry. This book is about a 10 year old girl named Annemarie and her best friend Ellen. Ellen has to pretend to be part of Annemarie’s family otherwise she will be relocated. Then Annemarie has to bring a package to Uncle Henrik to save her best friend’s life.

The importance of this package is because it has cocaine which will numb the dog's sense of smell and it also has rabbit blood which will make the dog want to smell it. So when the dog's are trying to sniff out the Jews they will not smell anything and they will not be able to relocate the Jews. Lois Lowry builds suspense by making the reader think that she will not be able to give the handkerchief to Uncle Henrik and will not be able to save Ellen’s life.
If I were Annemarie I would feel scared and would not be able to confront the soldiers.

In my opinion I think Annemarie is a really brave girl she was brave enough to hurdle lots of obstacles. An example of her being brave is when she faced the nazis soldiers and there was a slight chance that she would not be able to deliver the package to Uncle Henrik or when she got stopped by the soldiers when she was running down the street.

In conclusion I think this book has a lot of suspense and I also think Annemarie is brave. If you were Annemarie would you be able to be that brave and save your best friend’s life?

  3. You did a really good job in explaining your answer. You also used evidence from the text and even went back to the beginning to talk about why you think she is brave. Also, I agree that she is very brave.

  4. Ria I like how you asked a question at the end of you post. Yes I would try to be brave but I probably would not be able to and I would go with another friend.
