Q: What is the theme or life lesson in the story Planting Things?

A: I think the theme in the story Planting Things is that " Even though it is an animal, treat them kindly as human beings.  You can still try your best to protect them." One reason is that when Mr. Willis saw the robin, he did not destroy the nest or touch it. Another reason is that he sat there and watched it everyday. He made sure it was safe, and tried to protect it from visitors that will steal the eggs and damage the nest. This makes me realise that being kind to others could make you feel happier, and the person would be happy, too.

Week 3 - Group 2 CISS Every Living Thing

In the story, Planting Things the Theme is you should care for others. Because if you do something nice to someone, they may really appreciate it or they will do something really nice back to you.

For example, every morning Mr.Willis would make breakfast for his wife every morning. And if I were to do that, in 2 weeks I would be very bored and sick of it. Rather than Mr.Willis he would make breakfast for his wife every morning.
Another example, is on a Thursday morning Mr.Willis say a Mother Robin making a nest on some Swedish Ivy. When Mr.Willis saw that he ran to his wife he tried to help his wife get up but she said that she would stay in bed for a little longer. So a little later he came back and helped her wife get up. And she did. When she saw the Robins, she said " Good job a fellow."

This makes me realise that Mr.Willis cares for others and though I should care for others. Because if you do something nice to somebody they would really appreciate it or, they would do something really nice back to you.

        In the 3 page short story called Spaghetti the author shows that Gabriel is feeling lonely.

        One example why the author shows that Gabriel is feeling lonely because the author says, "Gabriel was thinking that he would like to live outside all the time." That way he would have more company. He doesn't have any company and wanted some company. He is sitting in front a crumbled building with rotted wood thinking about things.

        Another example is that when Gabriel finds a cat he takes it home and names it Spaghetti because it smells like spaghetti. He takes the cat because he wants something or someone to stay with him.

        This is why the author shows that Gabriel is feeling lonely.

Week 2-Group 2-Every Living Thing-CISS

In the story chapter Spaghetti, one way the author is showing us that Gabriel was lonely is because he remembered being the only student in his class who got the right answer and eating his peanut butter sandwich. Another way the author showed this was because Gabriel  was sitting on the rooftop of a tall building all by himself without anyone to talk to. The last way is because he was wishing for company. This makes me realize that people can show that they are lonely in many different ways.

Q: How did the author show that Gabriel is lonely? 

A: One way the author showed Gabriel is very lonely is that he said Gabriel sits on the roof by himself.  Maybe he just likes to look at the sun, wondering about his life. Another reason why is that he was on the streets by himself at night. If he wasn't lonely, by this time he should go back home to eat dinner. Maybe his parents died, so he had to live by himself. The third reason why is when he found Spaghetti, he was really happy. He was happy because he finally had a friend to be with, and not lonely anymore. This makes me realise that pets can heal our broken hearts.

Wk1 - Gr2 - CISS Every Living Thing What the connections between the storys.

In the story, Every Living Thing by S.D. Schindler, Slower Than the Rest and Papa Parrot are the same and different. They are similar because they both show some carrying for something. Every Living Thing is different because Leo reports about the Turtle. Papa Parrot is different because  it explained it as a life time.

For example, Slower Than the Rest is different than Papa Parrot. Because this time he gave a report about the Turtle. Because, at first Leo saw a Turtle a the highway. Then he asked his Mom if he could pick it up. His Mom said "Yes. You may pick it up." So he picked it up and worked hard to make a report about the Turtle. The next day when he had to give his report to the class, he gave such a strong report, he made his teacher start sobbing. Plus, he won first place in the report contest. This makes me realise that he cares for the Turtle.

Another example is Papa Parrot is different because they explained it for a long period of time. Also Mr. Tillian had a blubbery stomach. At first Mr. Tillian was unpacking some boxes. Then he became ill. He hugged his chest and fell on top of the candy. After a customer find him and took him to the hospital. This is why, Papa parrot is different than Slower Than the Rest.

My final example is Papa Parrot and Slower Than the Rest is the same is because they both show some love and care. For example, in Slower Than the Rest Leo showed some care for the Turtle. Because he gave a very strong report about this Turtle. In Papa Parrot the customer showed care for the store while the man who worked there was in the hospital. Because when the man who was unpacking the boxes he hugged his chest and fell to the ground.

This makes me realize that both of them show care for what was in the story. Papa Parrot is different because in the story it explained a life time. Slower Than the Rest is different because Leo showed care for the Turtle and gave a report about this.

WK1-Group 2-Every Living Thing-CISS-What is the connection between chapter 1 to 4?

In the story Every Living Thing, the connection I can see is that the human beings are interacting with the animals and that made the human being's life change. One reason is that in the story chapter "Slower Than the Rest", Leo's turtle, Charlie, became Leo's best friend. His love for Charlie made him want to use him for his presentation at school. This won him an award and for the first time. Leo was feeling fast. Charlie changed Leo's life by making him feel as good as the others.

The second reason is in the story chapter "Retired", when there was a retired teacher who bought a dog to keep her company. Over time, through the dog, she was reconnected to school children. In this way, the dog changed her life.

The third reason is in the story chapter "Boar Out There". Jenny used to think that the boar was mean and dangerous, but when she came face to face with the boar, she realized that it was scared of her and the blue jays. This changes Jenny's life by making her feel sorry for the boar that he lives in fear.

The final reason is in the story chapter "Papa's Parrot". Mr. Tillian's son used to come to his father's shop everyday after school but when he reached high school, he stopped doing that. That made his dad feel lonely. So, he bought a parrot to talk to. That changed Mr. Tillian's life by having some company from someone. This makes me realize that animals can change human being's life.

Q: What are the connections between stories 1~4?

A: From the book "Every Living Thing",  Chapters 1 and 4 is similar. One reason why it's similar is because at the end of the story, the main character learnt something, or a lesson. For example: In chapter 1, at last, Leo felt he was fast. In chapter 4, Harry learned that his dad was always missing him in the store.

Another reason is that the animal interacts with the main character. In chapter 1, Charlie( The turtle) would poke its head in Leo's neck. In chapter 4, the parrot talks with Harry. (Not really talk in human language, but repeating all the things Harry's dad says. This makes me realise that sometimes living things can make a different in us.
